What the site does

There are no accounts, payments, subscriptions or contact forms. The site code includes no analytics, advertising trackers or embedded maps. Images, scripts and styles are served from the site’s hosting service.

Your privacy preference

Choosing “Remember my choice” stores one privacy preference in this browser’s local storage. “Continue without saving” closes the notice on the current page and removes an earlier saved preference. Reopen the notice through “Privacy settings” in the footer. A saved preference remains until you remove it or clear the site’s browser data.

Interactive features

Article searches, topic filters, the field-notes checklist and the animation setting are held in the open page’s memory. They reset on reload and are not submitted to the editor.

Hosting and external services

The hosting provider receives technical information needed to respond to requests, such as IP addresses, requested URLs and browser information. Its handling and retention of that information depend on the hosting service. Following a source, map, email or telephone link opens another service with its own privacy practices.

Messages to the editor

If you contact the editor, the recipient receives your message and associated details through the communication service you use. These may be used to answer your question or review a correction. Share only what is needed for your enquiry.

Questions and changes

Use the editor’s contact details for questions about information you have shared directly, including requests to correct or delete it. Adding forms, analytics or other data-handling features would require an update to this page.
